Last year the Bank of England announced that Jane Austen would feature on the British £10 note from 2017. This followed a campaign led by Caroline Criado-Perez seeking to redress the gender balance on British currency by having more female representation (aside from The Queen).
Now the US treasury is set to follow suit with the announcement that it plans to feature a woman on a redesigned $10 note from 2020. Who will feature on the note has not yet been decided but it is clear that for many, how our currency looks and who it represents, it as important as how it is spent.
